Beautiful world, where are you?

Today, I simply want to share a stanza from a poem by German poet Friedrich Schiller, Die Götter Griechenlands – The Gods of Greece.

This poem, written in 1788 and later set to music in the form of an almost painfully beautiful song by Franz Schubert, is originally 25 verses long, although Schubert chose only one of these for his lied.  Having just spent some time in Liverpool, a city that is currently in the midst of its 2018 Biennial of Contemporary Art – a festival, set this year to the theme of Schubert’s particular chosen stanza, Schöne Welt, wo bist du? – Beautiful world, where are you? – I felt compelled to share these touching, emotional and very relevant words.

Schöne Welt, wo bist du? Kehre wieder
Holdes Blütenalter der Natur!
Ach, nur in dem Feenland der Lieder
Lebt noch deine fabelhafte Spur.
Ausgestorben trauert das Gefilde,
Keine Gottheit zeigt sich meinem Blick,
Ach, von jenem lebenwarmen
Bilde Blieb der Schatten nur zurück.
Fair world, where are you? Return again,
sweet springtime of nature!
Alas, only in the magic land of song
does your fabled memory live on.
The deserted fields mourn,
no god reveals himself to me;
of that warm, living image
only a shadow has remained.
English Translation © Richard Wigmore

The Biennial writes of this poem,  “Today the poem continues to suggest a world gripped by deep uncertainty; a world of social, political and environmental turmoil. It can be seen as a lament but also as an invitation to reconsider our past, advancing a new sense of beauty that might be shared in a more equitable way.” (Visit their website here)

Get The Cogs Turning…

Happy 2017!

It’s been quite a while since I last blogged and, I won’t lie, I have found it very difficult to get going again.  Something about this first post of the new year has seemed extremely daunting to me; it feels like after blogmas ended I sort of left my writing zone and forgot how to get back into it.  But I really didn’t want to put it off any longer and my wish to charge full-speed-ahead through this depressing ‘Blue Monday’ has provided me with the ultimate shove to just sit down and write.

I have been thinking a lot over the break about this blog, about how I want to use it and what direction I want it to go in, so I am very excited for the up-coming months and to really get ‘stuck in’ to writing again.  You can expect lots of new series, coverage of current and relevant topics, better photographs and, ultimately, my thoughts on subjects or issues that I find to be really important. Also, I wanted to add that I know lots of people who have been considering starting up a blog as a new hobby for 2017, and all I can say to those people is, DO IT!  Blogging is only a positive thing, it’s a wonderful and creative outlet and it can be exactly what you want it to be.  I have been blogging for about 10 months now and I have honestly never looked back.

I know that not everyone is a fan of the ‘new year, new me’ attitude, and to some extent I agree that it can seem a little false and overrated.  However, there is something about looking at the new year as a new start which I find to be very motivating.  It is a good pinpoint in time to consider how we live our lives, and there are definitely some changes that I want to make in 2017, in terms of how I approach various elements of my life.  I want to be as organised and prepared as I can be, I want to do the things I have wanted to do for so long, choose to care about the people and things that are most important to me and not about the silly ones.  2016, although wonderful in some ways, also had a lot of unbelievable crap in it.  But I can see all of that only in the way that it has taught me how I want to live in 2017.

So here’s to another year, hopefully better and with more progression, understanding, fulfilment and love than the last!  I hope you will enjoy my blog and what I put out there.  Let’s see what happens!

Freya’s Nook Does Blogmas 2016

If you’ve never heard of ‘Blogmas’, like me a couple of months ago, it is a daily blogging event, in which lots of bloggers like to take part in the lead up to Christmas; a kind of co-op between blogging and Christmas if you will.  The rules of blogmas are that you have to publish a blog post every single day from December 1st to 24th, all based loosely around the festive theme of the Christmas season, and this year I am happy to announce that I have accepted the blogmas challenge!

Perhaps it is becaue I am in my first year of blogging and this will be my blog’s first Christmas, perhaps it’s because I’ve always been terrified of the idea of daily blogging and am curious to see if I can manage it… maybe it’s just because I am really looking forward to Christmas and want to jump head first into the season!  Whatever the reason, I am really excited to be doing blogmas and I really hope you enjoy my content this December!

I have done a lot of research on blogmas and it definitely seems like there are some posts that are extremely common across lots of blogs, as well as some that are a little different.  I have tried to make my particular blogmas as personal to me as possible but at the same time still true to the theme of Christmas.  You will find some festive recipies, some personal thoguhts about some aspects of the season and some tips on how to manage various Christmassy issues.  I hope that there will be something to interest everyone and I’m really looking forward to hearing your thoughts and counting down the days to Christmas with you!

Let the daily blogging commence! See you on Thursday December 1st for the first installment!
